I've shot a number of stories for Monocle Magazine (including the Singapore Travel Guide) at this point, but this portrait shoot for the Urban Heroes feature in the current issue was one of the most interesting.
I was sent a brief to photograph Dr Lena Chan of the National Parks Board (NParks) and to photograph her in her environment on film. Naturally, I found myself at the Singapore Botanic Gardens armed with a Mamiya 6 in hand, a Leica M6 around my neck, and several rolls of 35mm and 120 film in my bag. It felt like this was as real as my photography career was going to get.
She showed me around the gardens, located some of her favourite trees where we shot the portraits, walked around with some lizards and gave me a quick lesson on some of our local wildlife.
Did you know that the garden is over 150 years old?
